Just a quick update : we're making some home recordings of new tunes and hope to have a few work in progress samples up here soon. Also Saffron has been getting some good experience singing for local producer Niall Conn resulting in success in the Irish download charts.
It's great to hear about some local bands doing really well with a bit of hard work. Here's an article with some news about Fighting With Wire , The Answer and In Case of Fire on the NIMIC website. http://www.nimusic.com/shownews.asp?id=498
The Savanna Sky bassist got a chance to play alongside the original drummer ( Brian Faloon ) from local music legends Stiff Little Fingers on Brian's birthday last night at the Duke of York, Belfast. The roughly strewn together band (named 'Sons Of Robert Mitchum' for the night) played an eclectic set including Tom Waits and Nick Cave covers and Brian graciously joined in on drums for the blast.
We love playing our own material live but it's also fun to do tunes by other people we like. So over the next few months we'll be doing a few cover sets doing songs by a broad range of artists including Alanis Morrisette, Evanescense, Bob Marley, Fleetwood Mac, Pearl Jam etc.
We'd like to hear suggestions from you for cover tunes that you think we should try.
And we'll be throwing in our own material as well...so all good. Check back/sign up for notification of venues/dates.
Thanks to the Common Grounds cafe on University Avenue for Friday, it was good to be playing with our mate Ruth McGonagle, who played a fine set, and the food + atmosphere were great as usual. If you are in the Holylands area at the back of Queen's University then pop in. www.commongrounds.co.uk

An article on a protest song that has a performance by the Savanna Sky bassist has appeared in today's Sunday Life newspaper.

The song, "Me and Bob Mugabe", a take on Kris Kristofferson's "Me and Bobby Magee" with new lyrics, was written and recorded to highlight the situation in Zimbabwe under Robert Mugabe.
The idea to record the song came from Morgan Moore, a local singer/songwriter and friend of the band, who grew up in South Africa until his family moved to Belfast when he was a teenager. The other musicians on the track are Neil Lavery of Canizares and Jack Forgey.
A musical slideshow is on youtube (see below). The webpage www.stopmugabe.co.uk links directly to the youtube video - please visit and spread the word.
A new website showcasing paintings by local artist Charles J McCartney is now online at -www.charleyart.com
The paintings capture regular Belfast cityscapes and Charley has kindly agreed to let us use his paintings in our promos.
Last week was a week when the planets beautifully aligned...
NEW songs!
The Belfast-Nashville songwriting talks and workshops have inspired the band's main songwriter, Alan McShane, to write a flury of 4 new songs (generally finishing at 5am!) & probably the best he's written in terms of lyrics. So a HUGE thanks to the inspiration of all the wonderful songwriters who made their way over here from the USA and elsewhere, all the the local talent and everyone that performed - it was a real success. It was also great to make new musical friends...there is so much musical talent here.
A special huge shout to Ralph Murphy, Iain Archer and Tobias Froberg who simply were life-changing.
More info on the Belfast Nashville Festival can be found at www.belfastnashville.com including info on the festival artists..all worth checking out.
NEW gigs!
We'll soon be playing the excellent Katy Daly's and a few more cool places on the local scene in the next few months in both the unplugged and full band lineup. So subscribe to our mailing list for information on dates when they are booked. The next full band gig is (our home!) the Front Page, 20th March [UPDATE : was a great gig, thanks to all the support and the other bands]
NEW photos!
We've got a some promo photos arranged for today so they will be up soon. There is a new photo on the photo page taken outside Katy's where we played the open mic night last Thursday. [UPDATE : the promo photos of Saffron are now up on the photo page]
Here's a spot on article by Tim Wheeler of Ash (interviewed by Chris Salmon in the Guardian) on the local music scene as he grew up and where it is today. Northern Ireland is certainly harmonising.
Nashville is Belfast's twin/sister city which is a bit of a good thing as Nashville is such a musical city.
The Belfast-Nashville festival runs from 20th-24th February and includes live acts from here and the US plus songwriting workshops by the pros. Check out www.belfastnashville.com
One of the main songwriters in the band will be on a musical journey to Nashville for a songwriting workshop weekend in April so they will be plenty of song inspiration and interesting stories to tell.
Phil is back from his 3 month stay in west coast USA with tales of house parties (with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs providing da music!), a new PRS guitar...and some new song ideas.
Al was at a weekend devoted to songwriting at Songcraft 2007 (oranised by NIMIC) which featured professional songwriters and lots of very talented local songwriters..a great experience that will surely help the band songwriting.
The Mackie Blog, an initial trial by guitarist Steve at blogging / world domination, is online now.
September '06: The Big Buzz magazine included an interview with the band in the September issue.
6th April '06 Savanna Sky featured on the Just Jones show, BBC Radio Ulster. We enjoyed a 20minute showcase on the Just Jones show, playing a LIVE acoustic session and chatting with George.
Listen to a sound clip (in MP3 format) of the very positive reactions of George and listeners who contacted the show.
April '06: The 2-track demo with Fire In My Soul and Let Go has finally been mixed and mastered after a lot of hard work. Grab your copy at a gig or email us to hear the finished version.
